Armstrong Painting & Construction An Angi Horror Story

The point: Angi sent my job to an unlicensed contractor who was running an unlicensed business, and has refused to take any responsibility for the damage done to my property.

Angi’s Role In This Story

Isaiah Armstrong was, and is currently, listed as “Angi-Certified” and Angi sent details of my job to them on May 2nd, 2021 at 10:38am CST. A contract was signed on May 23, 2021 and I provided him with the agreed 50% payment totaling $1,250. His “services” were performed on June 16, 2021.

During the performance of his “services” not only did Mr. Armstrong not abide by even a single point in our contract, he produced a product so substandard that an engineer I showed it to didn’t know whether to laugh or be horrified. He followed basically none of the standard practices involving concrete, what he poured in my yard was not to code, not to contract, and was actively damaging my house due to the negative slope allowing water to enter my walls. I had to sand-bag the slab to try to keep the water out before I could demolish it. It was so bad that it basically could not be saved and had to be totally demolished. This would have cost at least $800 if it had been done professionally. As it was, it cost me $300 and a week of my time.

Armstrong Painting & Construction did not appear to be a licensed general contractor either through the Alabama General Contractors board or the Alabama Homebuilders Licensure board. He would need to be licensed by one of these two to oversee basically any construction work in this state. Additionally, Armstrong Painting & Construction did not even appear to be a licensed business as of June of 2021. I checked Birmingham (where the business’s address is), Jefferson County, Adamsville (where the LLC is registered) and Madison (where I live). He had a license in Birmingham but it expired in 2020. He was not licensed to do work in Madison, where I live, which is required by city ordnance here. He would need a special class of business license to do this, but he had no active license, business or otherwise, anywhere that I have been able to find.

It took me less than 30 minutes (after the fact) to figure all this out. My requests to get information regarding his licensing and insurance directly from Mr. Armstrong have been ignored.

So, to sum it up, Angi sent my job to what appears to be an unlicensed contractor running an unlicensed business, 1.5 hours away from me, who I trusted based on the “Angi-Certified” mark. This person then proceeded to do $800 worth of damage to my property in addition to not fulfilling basically any part of the contract we signed, leaving me with an unusable slab and out $1,250 for it.

I trusted Angi to properly vet these people so I knew I was dealing with a trusted, licensed professional. After all, that’s what the “Angi-Certified” thing means, right? And yet, Isaiah Armstrong appears to be none of these. So what happened? Let’s dig into what is going on at Angi and see if we can figure out where everything went wrong.
